Yara Shahidi is a lot of things: an actress with impeccable comic timing, a style star on the rise, and a super-smart student who is just as dedicated to her AP U.S. History course as she is to calling out the injustices in America's past. But there's always more to your fave celebs than you know, which is why we asked Yara to play a little game we like to call Firsts.
The 16-year-old was more than down to play, and her answers revealed some major insight into who she is and what she believes. For example, the first lesson her mother taught her about beauty is that it's a quality that "comes from within," and that "it's about who you are inside," not "how much your lip gloss cost or where you got your highlighter from." And her first CD actually holds a special meaning for her family: It was her cousin's album, Illmatic. (BTW, her cousin is Nas, if you didn't pick up on that.)
Watch the whole video to find out, among other things, her first big fashion splurge - she treated herself when she found out Black-ish was getting picked up for its first season! - and the first time she realized she was famous. As for what she would do if she won a million dollars? The activist would save the world ... but she'd eat a chocolate bar first for energy. She's practical that way.
